SPIN MAGAZINE NAMES THEY LIVE! ONE OF “THE FOUR BEST SEATTLE BANDS YOU DON’T KNOW”

Grunge may be long gone, but a handful of the Seattle bands that played at the Capitol Hill Block Party festival in their hometown this past weekend proved that the Emerald City’s music scene is still one of the country’s best.
Competing for the attention of the 16, 000 strong crowd with the likes of headliners Sonic Youth, Built to Spill, Gossip, and Deerhunter, the following four local bands put on some of the weekend’s best shows.
There can never be too much weed rap, and They Live! does bouncy, blunted hip-hop with a love that can’t be faked. Backed by head-spinning members of the Mash Hall b-boy crew, MCs Dro Boy and Bruce Illest blew up the indoor Neumo’s stage on Friday night with tracks like “Weed Murder” and “(It’s) My Weed,” but the place really erupted when Dro Boy dropped verses over Illest’s remix of the Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness is the Move.”

SOME REVIEWS OF LAST NIGHTS THEY LIVE! SHOW AT CAPITOL HILL BLOCK PARTY!
July 25, 2009

The last set of the night I saw was They Live! and it is not a stretch at all to say these guys are going to be big. Get them on the right tour or get them the right amount of exposure and they will blow up, so see them while you can. There is nothing happening in Seattle right now that can match They Live!’s energy, stage presence and rapping skills. Be warned Seattle, your next rap superstars are here and they are They Live!

They Live! just fucking killed shit headlining the Neumos stage. MCs Dro Boy and Bruce Illest (aka Gatsby and BlesOne) are plenty entertaining on their own—genial, cartoonishly animated, and totally on top of their games—but their back-up breakdancer, Chase, as well as his accomplice, damn near steal the show. Whether twitchily stalking the stage like a meth-head on the song of the same name or pulling a lucky lady onstage for a recreation of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” video (complete with the Boss’ awesome Carlton-esque dance move), Chase is the act’s not-at-all-secret weapon. They did new song “Whitney” and old favorite “Weed Murderer.” They ended the set by pumping Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” rocking out a la Wayne’s World, before cutting the song up into a beat for one last jam, pulling the crowd up on stage to get down.
